GOVERNMENT: Kenya gained independence from Brittan in 1963 and is now a democratic republic, led by President Mwai Kibaki.
GEOGRAPHY: Kenya is the world’s forty-seventh-largest country with a population of about 38 million. It is home to a great many wildlife reserves including some of Africa’s most well-known parks, such as the Masai Mara, Samburu, and Amboseli.
CAPITAL: Nairobi.
CURRENCY: The Kenyan Shilling. We recommend taking as much cash as you can as you will need to pay for activities and drinks outside of the hotels.
LANGUAGES: The main languages are English and Swahili.
CLIMATE: Kenya has a tropical climate. Temperatures range between 50°F and 88°F during cold and hot seasons respectively, although parts of the country have temperatures that rarely fall below 93°F. The hottest period extends between February and March (77°F - 93°F) while the coldest period occurs between July and August (50°F - 68°F).
Kenya has two rainy seasons, October to December and April to June.
WHEN TO GO: Anytime of the year is good to visit Kenya. The best time to see the wild game is from July through September, when the grass is dry and short, making it easier to see the game, and when the migration is in the Masai Mara.
VISAS: Kenya has visa regulations, which are available before departure or upon arrival. Currently the visa for US Citizens is $25 USD per person. You must have four blank pages in your passport and apply online via the Kenyan embassy website.
CREDIT CARDS: Visa and MasterCard are accepted, but credit cards are not widely used. You can pay for anything you want at hotels using credit cards.
