Katavi National Park
Katavi is Tanzania’s most remote and largest National Park, covering over 2,500 square miles, and is surrounded by game and forest reserves. The park is defined by two major landscapes: the valley floor and the two escarpments that border it. The valley floor is mostly flat woodland savannah, dissected by rivers, floodplains, and shallow seasonal lakes. The escarpments vary from sheer cliffs to inselbergs and mountainous areas.
The park has some of Tanzania’s biggest densities of big game with herds of over 1,000 buffalo and an estimated 15,500 in total, over 2,500 elephants, more than 20,000 zebra, and possibly more than 200 mature lions. With the remoteness of this area, the park is not easily reached and is a destination for the true explorer and Africa connoisseur.
