Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife areas. Created two million years ago when the cone of a volcano collapsed, this 100-square-mile cavity is blessed with all the necessary ingredients to create a wildlife paradise.
The crater is famous for its big herds of animals: black rhino, hyena, and big black mane lions. Elephant bulls are seen in the crater itself, but the cow herds prefer to stay up in the forested areas of the Ngorongoro highlands and rarely venture down to the crater floor. The Masai, a livestock people who do not farm the land, live around the crater.
The crater has something to offer all year-round, but the climate is very hot and humid from November through March.
