GOVERNMENT: The United Republic of Tanzania is a unitary republic and is one of the most peaceful and stable countries in Africa. The current head of state is President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, elected in 2005.

GEOGRAPHY: Tanzania is the thirty-first-largest country in the world with a population of over 43 million. Home to famous names and places in the safari industry, such as Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and the Serengeti, Tanzania is a must-see.

CAPITAL: The capital of Tanzania is Dodoma, where parliament and some government offices are located. Dar es Salaam is the commercial city of Tanzania, while Arusha is considered the safari capital. Tourist areas include Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, Katavi National Park, Lake Tanganyika, Selous Game Reserve, Zanzibar, and the Spice Islands.

CURRENCY: The Tanzanian shilling. We suggest taking as much cash as you can as you will need to pay for activities and drinks outside of the hotels.

LANGUAGE: The main languages are English and Swahili.

CLIMATE: Tanzania has a tropical climate. Temperatures range between 50°F and 88°F during cold and hot seasons respectively, although in parts of the country, temperatures rarely fall below 68°F. The hottest period extends between November and February (77°F - 88°F) while the coldest period occurs between May and August (59°F - 68°F). Tanzania has two rainy seasons, October to December and March to May.

WHEN TO GO: Anytime of the year is good to visit Tanzania. The best time to see the game is from June through September when the grass is dry and short, making it easier to see the game. However, every season has its pleasures. January through March you can see the calving season of the migration.

VISAS: Tanzania requires visas, which are available before departure or upon arrival. Currently the visa for U.S. Citizens is $100 USD per person. You must have four blank pages in your passport and a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

CREDIT CARDS: Visa and MasterCard are accepted, but not widely. You can pay for anything you want at hotels using credit cards.
