The Serengeti

The Serengeti is a massive ecosystem whose famed open grasslands were formed millions of years ago from the ash of volcanoes. This occurrence made the subsurface impenetrable to many trees, but ideal for nutritious grass species. Not all of the Serengeti is flat and open; it is dotted with granite kopjes and acacia woodlands and dissected by rivers such as the famous Grumeti and Mara Rivers.

Covering about 600 miles, the Serengeti migration is a yearlong event, which moves through Kenya’s Masai Mara, down the eastern side of the Serengeti and back up the western Serengeti to Kenya. The Great Migration is a movement of 1.5 million wildebeest and about 500,000 other grazers such as Zebra and Topi. Supporting a multitude of predators large and small, the migration is arguably the greatest wildlife spectacle in the world today.
