Zanzibar and the Spice Islands
Zanzibar has a rich history with Egyptian, Phoenician, Indian, Chinese, Arab, and more recently Dutch and English traders. Arab influence has been in this region as early as the eighth century. Zanzibar is an archipelago made of Zanzibar, Pemba, and smaller islands. The main island of Zanzibar boasts Stone Town, the only functioning ancient town in East Africa. Zanzibar has a population of 800,000 who reflect the rich religious past—practicing Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. Swahili is the most widely spoken language, and Zanzibar is thought to be the birthplace of Swahili.
The Zanzibar archipelago is blessed with white, warm beaches and fishing villages unchanged by modern life. For those who like to dive, the coral reefs have a visibility of over 150 feet with an average year-round temperature of 80°F.
