Dear Talented Photographer,

I’m excited to be writing this letter to you. For some time, we’ve been working to put together a fantastic photography workshop with Peter Hurley and David J. West to help people change their lives with photography, and we’ve finally done it.

This 12-day journey will take you through southern Africa, where you will capture the people, the land, and the wildlife through the lens of a camera, under Peter and David’s watchful instruction and coaching.

I want to be perfectly clear: you will be a pro at capturing the souls of people, places, and things on film after this trip to Africa.

You will enjoy guided tours through spectacular Cape Town, wine tastings in some of the world’s oldest and best wine estates, visits to local community projects helping to revive townships, tours to one of the Seven Wonders of the World—Victoria Falls—and the magic of a Zimbabwe safari tour at the peak of game-viewing season.

As if that isn’t enough, with expert guides and two professional photographers who will teach you everything you need to know, you’ll learn to take professional-quality photos.

When you return from the journey, you will have the opportunity to submit up to three of your best photographs to be included in a collection that will become a coffee-table book. The proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the Hills of Africa Foundation, which promotes sustainable, responsible tourism and its benefits to the people, land, and wildlife of Africa (more about the Foundation later).

While you’re on your African journey, expect several exciting things to happen to you . . .

  • You’ll learn how to make the most of your digital camera while photographing some of the best subjects in the world—the people, land, and wildlife of Africa.
  • You will accrue an amazing portfolio of stunning photographs, even professionals would be proud of.
  • You will experience the natural high of being surrounded by nature and wildlife.
  • You will go home with your own fabulous headshot, taken in Africa by one of the best headshot photographers in the world, Peter Hurley.
  • You’ll gain an appreciation for inner beauty and for Africa you never thought possible.
  • You’ll learn how to turn your focus off the exterior and material stuff, and turn it toward internal joy and happiness by learning how to recognize and capture the soul of a person, place, or thing with a camera.
  • You might even lose some of your attachment to material things.

“WOW! You girls put together an AMAZING itinerary for our trip to South Africa! My husband told me that it was the most fantastic trip we had ever taken. Considering that we’ve been travelling together for 21 of our 41 years—that’s HUGE! I cannot thank you enough for the arrangements you made. The itinerary gave us such a wonderful perspective of the different landscapes, cultures, cuisine, wine, and people of South Africa. Your choice of lodging was impeccable. Each one outdid the previous one. Thank you for all your help and suggestions. Thanks to you, we truly had a trip of a lifetime! ”
Mary Macchiaroli, Cape Coral, FL

Why is Africa in Focus different from other Africa safari workshops?

Certainly, other photography workshops take place in Africa, but our trip focuses on the three main resources we want to preserve in Africa—the people, the land, and the wildlife. Most other photography workshops focus only on photographing wildlife.

Because you’ll also have the opportunity to submit your best photos for the coffee-table book, you’ll be giving back to the place you visit. No other photography workshops offer this kind of opportunity.

Since most of you probably know one of our esteemed partners, but not the other . . .

Who are Peter Hurley and David J. West?

Peter Hurley

Peter Hurley, the most sought-after headshot photographer in the country, started out in a different profession: competitive sailing. Peter’s love of sailing has taken him around the world, and it’s through the sport that he became a model, starring in campaigns for Abercrombie & Fitch and Ralph Lauren Polo Sport. Bruce Weber, who shot the Polo campaign, soon became Peter’s friend and mentor behind the camera because he recognized Peter’s natural ability to capture his own remarkable images.

Because of his eye, his technique, and his engaging personality, Peter brings out the very best of everyone who sits for him. Since opening his studios in New York and Los Angeles, he has worked with various companies including Levi’s, Reebok, DKNY, and Johnnie Walker, and has shot hundreds of actors, models, authors, and entertainers.

While training for the Olympics, Peter competed in the 1996 Laser World Championship in Cape Town, and he has always wanted to go back and see more of the continent and experience the African culture. Thanks to Hills of Africa Travel, the Africa in Focus workshop is a culmination of that dream. On the trip, Peter will share his knowledge, teaching travelers how to capture the ultimate portrait, in any setting. Plus, he’ll be the official trip documentarian, shooting pictures of all of the travelers that will become the cornerstone of memories from this trip of a lifetime.

David J. West

David J. West is an award-winning landscape photographer with a gallery located just outside Zion National Park in Utah. In 2009, David was recognized as a top 10 finalist for the 2009 Hasselblad Masters Award. He has conducted dozens of photography workshops and loves to share with others his passion and techniques, which have helped make him a successful nature photographer.

We’re privileged to be working with these two special men and know you will treasure their advice and teaching.

So Why Africa . . . what’s so special about Africa?

My clients ask me this daily, because each one returns from his or her Africa safari tour with an incredible feeling that he or she can’t explain. I know what they mean—it’s a high, and it’s the most exhilarating, buoyant feeling I’ve ever had.

I used to ask myself the same thing every time I visited Africa. The answer finally hit me, and I felt a little silly because it was so obvious.

It’s the ENERGY!

It’s a clean, pure energy, with a complete absence of negativity that exerts almost a magnetic pull. It’s an energy boost. You’ll feel a one-of-a-kind lift of nature and its pure energy.

This is energy outside you—an external energy boost, much like when you go to a concert. It’s in the air, and you can’t help but catch the feeling.
But Africa, more than anywhere else in the world, gives you an internal energy boost.

When you begin your Africa safari tour, you’ll feel an energetic boost on the inside. It seems odd just reading about it, but I promise you’ll feel it from the moment you step foot on African soil.

You’ll find this boost coming from two sources, both of which you’ll be able to capture with your camera:

1) Game viewing
There is something completely consuming and addictive about game viewing in beautiful settings like those seen in our Victoria Falls tours,  Zimbabwe safari tours, or Zambezi River cruises—but this is one addiction that’s actually good for you.

When all you can see in any direction is nature, and then you hear rustling in the bushes and out comes a mamma lion and her two baby cubs, you’ll learn what it’s about to be fully in the moment. Your mind will be focused on watching every move these majestic cats make. When you see the baby cubs playfully follow their mother, you’ll be filled with wonder . . . and with that exhilarating internal boost that makes you feel truly alive.

Africa safari tours, and their sights and sounds, give you a perspective that you haven’t had since your childhood. Everything is fresh and new. Anything is possible. You connect deeply with the universe and feel pure joy—an emotion you may not have experienced for years.

But most important, game viewing is really meditation. Because you’re so involved in what’s happening before your eyes, your internal “head chatter” stops, and you’re living and breathing in the moment. You’re not thinking about that project due at work or your next audition. You’re fully immersed in the present, and your mind isn’t going anywhere. You’re meditating, which boosts your energy.

2) Being of service to the locals and the environment

You don’t have to do anything, except take a trip to Africa, to make a meaningful, lasting impact on the lives of the locals, the wildlife, and the land. Hills of Africa Travel supports only tourism establishments whose values follow a simple tenet:

Care of the land, care of the wildlife, and care of the people.

You will stay at The Hide Safari Lodge, a Zimbabwe safari vacation lodge that:

  • Hires only people from the immediate local villages.
  • Provides training to give employees the skills to be promoted within or to find employment elsewhere.
  • Is located in Hwange National Park, the largest land and game reserve in Zimbabwe, home to over 100 species of animals and over 400 species of birds.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are two countries rich in natural tourism resources. While we at Hills of Africa Travel love helping clients create Africa safari tours of their dreams, it's helping the people, land and wildlife of Africa that drives us the most. Our number one priority is to preserve these precious resources.

We have been planning safaris for 10 years and only support tourism establishments with high standards.

Our family is from Zimbabwe, and we know firsthand the incredible good that can come from tourism dollars directed properly. It fills our hearts to be a part of that. On this journey, you will get to witness—and capture on film—the beauty of the land, people, and wildlife of Africa.

But it's also time for us to give back in a bigger way. That is why we have created the Hills of Africa Foundation, which supports sustainable tourism. Without properly managed sustainable tourism, water would not be pumped to waterholes, and there would be no family of elephants playing joyfully for you to watch. There would be no school for those smiling children who love to see you, and there might not be a quiet place left in the world.

We formed the Hills of Africa Foundation because Africa is OUR cause and we want to continue the good that tourism provides to these very special places on earth.

Just knowing that your Africa safari tour is supporting amazing causes and is making a meaningful, lasting impact gives you that internal boost we’ve been talking about.

So what does all this mean for your connection with your inner self?

  • You will connect with your inner self when you see the big, broad smiles of the staff that welcome you to your Zimbabwe safari tour.
  • You will connect with your inner self when you watch a female lion with her cubs.
  • You will connect with your inner self when you listen to the beautiful sounds of nature on your Zambezi River cruise.
  • You will find yourself in a place of joy, gratitude, and enthusiasm you haven’t experienced in many years.

Does the thought of a trip to Africa make you a bit nervous?

The only way to grow, or discover and express, your inner self is to step outside your comfort zone. You have to stretch yourself, and what better place to do it than in Africa?

It’s not easy, but the payoff is incredible. And you’re worth it.

When you stretch yourself and step into your fear, you learn. The more you learn, the more you grow.

And guess what happens when you grow? Opportunities fall into your lap!

We all have to step outside that comfort zone to discover our inner selves.

This might surprise you:  my first trip to Africa was not my idea, and I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect. I never wanted to travel to Africa. I thought Africa was for people who wanted to go on safari, ride elephants, and smell dung all day.

I love to travel, but I don’t do it unless it’s in style.

I saw Africa as a hot, dusty place, with no ocean to gaze at. No, thank you. I didn’t believe the food could be any good, and certainly not up to the standards I was used to. (Yes, I was a major travel snob.)

And the thought of sleeping in a tent—and huge bugs—was enough to push Africa way down my list. But there was a family wedding going on, and I was expected to be there. So I bit the bullet and off I went.

I am proud to say I was WRONG!

What I found on my trip to Zimbabwe was scenery so breathtaking it made me want to cry, wildlife so beautiful and majestic I could watch for hours, hotels and resorts better than any place I had ever been, and food so good it made my mouth water.

Then there were the people.

I was welcomed with open arms, smiling faces, and a warm hospitality I’ve never come close to anywhere else.

Last and most important, there was a striking peace, a magnetic draw, an aspect of Africa that is beyond our five senses. This is the Africa I have come to know and love.

“The darkest thing about Africa is the ignorance of it.”

Africa is a magical, perfect travel destination. We feel Africa is misunderstood, mostly due to negative media. We want to create positive media and inspire more people to travel to Africa and continue directing travel dollars into the best hands so the people, land, and wildlife of Africa can continue to benefit.

So maybe the concept of an Africa safari tour doesn’t make you nervous, or you’ve dreamed of traveling to Africa all your life.

That sounds great, but how do I know Africa in Focus is for me?

This African safari tour is perfect for you if you . . .

  • Are tired of being surrounded by a world focused on material things and want to gain a new perspective on life and learn to look at inner beauty alone.
  • Want to witness the world’s most beautiful animals in their natural environment, feel the wind in your hair, and taste life in a different way.
  • Have always dreamed of traveling to Africa but didn’t know when or how.
  • Want one fantastic portrait of yourself in Africa.
  • Have always wanted to travel on a journey where you know your travel dollars are making a significant positive impact on the people, land, and wildlife you visit.
  • Want to be part of an effort to continue providing an economic benefit to the locals.
  • Want to learn how to get the best use out of your digital SLR camera with some of the world’s best subjects, and under the direction of two well-known professionals.
  • Have always wanted gorgeous photos of wildlife, landscape, and people of Africa all over the walls of your home.

However, this African safari tour is NOT for you if you . . .

  • Are not open to adventure or stepping outside your comfort zone.
  • Don’t take constructive criticism well.
  • Want to keep your life predictable and boring.
  • Don’t care about making a difference or giving back.
  • Don’t like to meet new people.
  • Don’t like exposing yourself to or learning about new cultures.

Why Peter Hurley and David J. West?

When we decided to partner with Peter Hurley and David J. West and offer this trip, we realized people that follow their work could be from very different walks of life.

As one of the most famous headshot photographers in the U.S., most of the people Peter works with are in the entertainment business.  They are actors, actresses or well known in the media.  Most of them reside in either LA or New York and their careers can sometimes seem like a roller coaster ride.

On the other hand, David’s clients and customers span a broader spectrum, many of whom are established professionals who enjoy nature, traveling, and photography.

Could we ever bring these two groups together for a successful
African safari tour?

After all, these groups are quite different from each other. If you’re an actor or actress, you’re focused on your career, and you’re wondering where it will lead you. You wonder if you’ll ever become a “somebody.” By necessity and because of the nature of show business, much of your focus must be on your appearance and how you can get your big break to success—but you know there is so much more to life than a perfect smile and stunning figure or physique . . .

  • You’re stuck in a world where everything is focused on having the right look, the right body—all things exterior.
  • You’re surrounded by people who only care about what your looks can do for them—and they don’t see the real, authentic you inside.
  • You’re longing for a connection with people that goes past “skin deep.”
  • You’re feeling a deep need to be appreciated for your inner beauty, your personality, your unique abilities—but you may be afraid to let others get that close to you.

You sometimes feel as if you’re losing yourself—your essence, the true you. You want to get reacquainted with yourself and your soul. You’re tired of being surrounded by people who only talk about Botox, plastic surgery, the latest fad diet, and getting invited to the hottest events. You know it’s not working, and the more you try to fix your appearance, even though nothing is wrong, the more you feel unsettled inside.

One trip to Africa can change all this.

On the other hand . . .

If you learned about this opportunity through David J. West, you probably:

  • Love taking pictures, but never treated yourself to an intense photography workshop at a destination halfway around the world to learn the art from a professional
  • Want to capture your travels, decorate your walls with your own stunning photographs and have the camera equipment to do it, but don’t know how to use it or get the most out of it.
  • LOVE to travel. You feel a sense of adventure going to new places, but want to experience places as a traveler, not a tourist
  • Love knowing that you are going somewhere meaningful or doing something to help.
  • Get great joy out of volunteering as a way to give back; to make a difference.
  • Have always wanted to travel to Africa because of your passion for nature and wildlife.
  • But you’re thinking about security and retirement, and worry that spending 12 days and thousands of dollars on a photography workshop is not the most responsible thing to do

Are your inner feelings really that different from those in the entertainment business?

Isn’t everyone seeking inner fulfillment and a way to explore and express their true inner selves?

It was an AH-HA moment!

We realized that both Peter’s clients and David’s clients have a need for their lives to have meaning and to be significant. You want your life to matter. You want to rediscover your inner beauty or inner peace and express it in a meaningful way.

You want to feel secure and valued for who you are, not for what you look like or what your job is.

That’s when we knew this trip to Africa would be just the ticket for anyone familiar with or working with Peter Hurley or with David J. West.

How will this trip help you?

When you travel on this Africa safari tour, you will connect with a part of yourself you might never have experienced before, because you’ve been too caught up in the material world and the insecurity and chaos of everyday life.

You’ll connect with a part of yourself that is far more wonderful than any promotion, corner office, white smile, or muscular chest. When you travel on this trip to Africa, you will appreciate the splendor of nature, the incredible smile of a local township boy, and a positive energy inside, changing you—revealing a far happier inner self.

You will finally get to travel on a journey where you know you are helping the locals, the wildlife, and the environment. Part of your trip will involve giving back to those you encounter, and there is a tremendous feel-good factor in that.

You will learn that you can be significant in a totally inconspicuous way, and that is so empowering. You will learn how fulfilling it can be to simply connect with others, with nature, and with yourself, and that it doesn’t matter how you look or what you own.

“Hills of Africa provided, by far, the best travel experience I have ever had. The amount of planning that went into the trip was just incredible, and no detail was left unattended. They knew exactly how to provide the perfect travel adventure. And they are fun and easy to work with which is a bonus! Hills of Africa also supports businesses that help the communities we were in, which is important to me. And they have the exact knowledge and expertise necessary to plan such trips. I would recommend them to anyone traveling to Africa.”
Kelli Nichols, Vashon, WA

“Can I afford NOT to go on this journey?”

“Yes! I'm Ready to FINALLY Discover My Inner Self and Learn to Capture the World on Film with Africa in Focus: Capture the Soul of Africa with Peter Hurley and David J. West.”

I understand I'll be one of the lucky 10 travelers on a 12-day Zimbabwe safari tour with Hills of Africa Travel from September 24 through October 5, 2010. On this journey, I will immerse myself in digital photography with guidance by Peter Hurley and David J. West and benefit from the energetic boosts of nature, game viewing, and helping locals, while enjoying all the activities of a leisure visit!

I will enjoy 3 wonderful nights in Victoria Falls, staying at the world-class Victoria Falls Safari Lodge!

I understand that my 3 nights of accommodations at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge include breakfast daily, use of all amenities, a Zambezi River cruise, a 15-minute helicopter tour over the falls, an afternoon elephant back safari, a tour of a local village and a Victoria Falls tour!

I will enjoy the 4 awesome nights at The Hide Safari Lodge on an all-inclusive basis!

I understand that my 4 nights of accommodations at The Hide include 3 meals daily, unlimited drinks, teas, and coffees, Hwange National Park safaris, and twice-daily game drives with the services of an expert guide and tracker in the comfort of an open-top Land Rover!

I will enjoy the 4 nights at the incredible Victoria & Albert Hotel on a bed-and-breakfast basis!

I understand that my 4 nights of accommodations at Victoria & Albert Hotel include breakfast, a full day of wine tasting, a visit to the top of Table Mountain, a tour of the Cape Town townships and lunch at Eziko, and the full-day tour of Cape Peninsula with the trip to the Cape of Good Hope and watching the penguins play at Boulders Beach!

I'm excited about the 10 days of photo debriefings and critiques with Peter Hurley and David J. West, where I will learn all about professional digital photography. I will be able to ask them all the questions I have and finally learn to take photos like a pro!

I understand that when I arrive at Victoria Falls Airport, I will be met by a representative from the Hills of Africa Travel team!

I am excited to be invited to join the Yahoo Group of like-minded souls and my fellow travelers so I can get to know them before I even begin my journey!

I can't wait to experience the energetic boost of an Africa safari tour and feel the internal energetic boost I get from game viewing and interacting with the locals!

I feel blessed to be spending 12 full days with Peter Hurley and David J. West and will take advantage of the ability to ask them all my questions!

I am excited to meet all the other travelers and form long-lasting friendships!

I understand that if I am traveling alone, I will be paired with a roommate!

I understand that to take my best shots, Peter and David suggest I bring my camera, owner’s manual, a laptop for editing and saving my shots, a lens cleaner, beanbag support and tripod, multiple memory cards, and two batteries with charger.

I understand that once I book myself on the Africa in Focus: Capture the Soul of Africa with Peter Hurley and David J. West, I will need to book my international flights, which will have me arrive in Victoria Falls by 2 pm on September 24, 2010, and depart Cape Town anytime on October 5, 2010!
