Hwange National Park: Africa’s Wilderness Haven

Hwange National Park resembles what much of the interior of Africa was like more than 150 years ago—with plentiful game, unspoiled bush, and excellent private guides. Arguably southern Africa's greatest wilderness haven, Hwange is Zimbabwe's flagship national park. The park has been set aside solely to conserve wildlife in its natural habitat. With a land area of more than 14,000 square kilometers, Hwange boasts over 100 different species of animal and 400 species of bird—a concentration that makes this National Park one of the finest in the world.

Almost all of Zimbabwe's specially protected animals are to be found in Hwange. It’s the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena can be found in reasonable numbers. The population of wild dog found in Hwange is thought to be the largest surviving in Africa today.

• Hwange owes much of its success in attracting a large amount of game to the boreholes (wells) that were first sunk in 1939. There are currently about 50 permanent water holes.
• Game viewing is at its best during the months of September through November when the pumped water holes lure daunting volumes of wildlife, such as roan and sable antelope, across the border from the thirst-lands of Botswana.
