Facts about Zimbabwe

GOVERNMENT: Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most delightful countries with its rich wildlife heritage, offering some of the best game viewing in the world. Zimbabwe’s President is the Hon. Robert Gabriel Mugabe.

GEOGRAPHY: Zimbabwe’s population is approximately 14 million people and consists mainly of Shonas and Ndebeles

CAPITAL: The capital of Zimbabwe is Harare. Gateways into Zimbabwe are Harare, Victoria Falls and Bulawayo. Tourist areas are Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Kariba, and the Mutare region, which includes Nyanga and Bvumba.

CURRENCY: Zimbabwe Dollar, but USD is mostly used. We suggest taking as much cash as you can, as you will need to pay for activities and drinks outside of the hotels. There is no way to access foreign cash (no ATMs) in Zimbabwe, so you should ensure that you enter the country with sufficient funds to cover any extra activities or meals.

LANGUAGES: The main languages are English, Shona, and Ndebele.

CLIMATE: Zimbabwe’s summers are hot with temperatures in the 90s during the day and approximately 10 hours of sunshine. Winter days are warm with temperatures in the mid 70s and chilly evenings. The dry season is from April to October, with more rain accumulating between the months of December and March.

WHEN TO GO: Anytime of year is good to visit Zimbabwe. Best time to see the game is from June through September, when the grass is dry and short, making it easier to see the game. However, every season has its pleasures. January through March you can see the newborn babies and the beauty of a new earth after the rains. Winter days are warm and glorious, but the nights and early mornings are very cold.

VISAS: Zimbabwe has visa regulations, which are available upon arrival. Currently the visa for US Citizens is $35 USD per person. DEPARTURE TAX: Charged on final exit and is USD20 per person. Please check with us as this may be included in your international airline ticket price.

CREDIT CARDS: Only Visa, Diners, and AMEX are accepted. MasterCard is not accepted. You can pay for anything you want at hotels using credit cards, but it is advised that you do not use your credit card outside of the hotels.
