I am so honored to say that 10 years ago this month, Hills of Africa was born. And for the month of September, we plan on celebrating our very happy birthday with all of our clients, blog readers, newsletter subscribers, and travel partners!

Back in September 2002, I co-founded Hills of Africa Travel and cultivated it from a dream into reality. For 10 years now, I’ve been doing what I love: planning luxury trips of a lifetime to Africa. And as the years have gone by, it’s safe to say that the business has grown and expanded beyond my wildest dreams—but not too much since we believe in remaining a boutique African safari travel company—and we have built fruitful relationships with hundreds of clients from around the world.

So why am I telling you about our 10th Birthday? Because I know the importance of celebrating those milestone birthdays (especially the ones that end in zero and five!), and I wanted to let you know that one of Hills of Africa’s specialties is creating unique and memorable experiences for people celebrating a special birthday.

Below are the Hills of Africa Travel’s staff picks for dream birthday celebrations to Africa:

Sandy Salle >> Owner & CEO: “Having grown up in Zimbabwe and with most of my family still living there (including my sister, brother, mother, and father), I would absolutely visit Zimbabwe as part of my birthday celebration in Africa! And because I love family getaways, I would, of course, bring my husband and two children with me to partake in my birthday festivities!

Whilst in Zimbabwe, my first day would include a visit to Victoria Falls—one of the most inspirational and stunning natural wonders of the world. For the next few days in Zimbabwe I would spend my time in Hwange National Park, looking out for the Big Five on game drives and mokoro (canoe) safaris with the family. And to top off every evening, I would have a sundowner beneath the stars!”

Amy Green >> Director of Client Services: “Wow—a two-week long birthday celebration in Africa? That would be my dream—not to mention the best birthday present ever!

Going to the beach is one of my favorite ways to spend a vacation, so I would definitely want to fit in some serious beach time during my trip. And since Mozambique has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, I would definitely spend five days at the Azura Resort on Benguerra Island, off the coast of Mozambique. I would also love to visit Zanzibar—an island off the coast of Tanzania—since I’ve never been before and hear it is not only stunning, but also has some of the best beaches and cultural excursions in East Africa.

In terms of accommodations—I have to say I’m not much of a camper—so I would want to stay somewhere that had floors and doors! Some of my favorite accommodations that I would love to stay in for my birthday safari include Cape Grace in South Africa, The Palms on Zanzibar, Azura Resort in Mozambique, and the Lake Manyara Tree Lodge in Tanzania.”

Michelle >> Group Trip & Special Projects Coordinator: “Tanzania and South Africa would be at the top of my list for a dream birthday safari!

I’d start my birthday trip in Tanzania to witness the Great Migration where millions of wildebeest and zebra gather. And during my visit in Tanzania, I would stay in one of the country’s most luxurious accommodations, Lamai Serengeti. The best part about this lodge is that you can enjoy loads of adventure in the Serengeti, but then come back to the lodge to enjoy relaxing afternoons reading a book outside, sipping sundowners, or just soaking in the beauty of nature from your private balcony.

After a few days in Tanzania, I would head down to Cape Town, South Africa where I’d go on a peninsula tour and visit Boulders Beach to see all of the adorable penguins that live there. I’d also spend a day exploring the wonderful shops and amazing restaurants that Cape Town is so famous for before heading up to Table Mountain for a cable car ride. Oh, and of course, I would want a massage at the spa at One&Only in Cape Town.

After spending some time in the city, I’d then take a trip to Cape Winelands where I’d go on a horseback wine tasting tour and enjoy lazy afternoons sipping wines at local vineyards.

Now, THAT, would be my dream birthday celebration!”
