La Cle Des Montagnes Country Lodge – Franschhoek

by Sandy Salle on September 18, 2018

I arrived at La Cle Des Montagnes Country Lodge in the early evening after a full day Cape Winelands tour.   There is a beautiful rod iron gate that is engraved with “La Cle Des Montagnes” as the locked front gate on the street. Upon entering, the lodge manager greeted me warmly and took my bags straight to my room. She then gave me a tour of the property. As you walk into the lodge, the kitchen is to the left and the communal dining room and living room are straight in front of you. There are 2 fireplaces — one in the dining room and one in the living room. Beautiful French doors open up to the pool and garden area. There are 2 guest rooms off the living room (pool rooms), 1 room off the garden to the right. Upstairs, there is a nice sitting room and the 2 loft rooms (I stayed in 1 of the loft rooms).   There are 5 double en-suite bedrooms in total.

The lodge was once the office for the land owner.   It is traditional Cape Dutch home and it is designed by Jacques Erasmus of Hemelhuijs.   It is located on a working vineyard that also boasts a putting green and a heli-pad. The lodge is just a 3-minute walk to downtown Franschhoek.

I stayed in one of the loft rooms upstairs and it was divine. The bathroom was spectacular with 2 sinks and double showerheads and hand held sprayers. Heated towel rack with high-end very fluffy towels. Bathroom product amenities were luxurious as well. The bathroom was quite large and plenty of room for 2 people.

The king size bed was very comfortable with Egyptian cotton linens.   There was chilled wine waiting for me in my room as well as sherry, a snack basket and coffee/tea service. There is a desk which had 2 welcome notes waiting for me.   Small closet but didn’t even need it for my 1 night stay. Laundry services, free wifi (code required) and bicycles are available.

They serve a chef’s dinner on most evenings at the communal dining room table which seats up to 10.  There were several travel agents besides myself that were at the lodge, so they prepared the chef dinner for us on a Saturday evening (not normally a chef dinner night). It was a baked chicken with mushroom sauce, palenta and fresh broccolini. A caeser salad with fresh anchovies and fresh bread were also served. Dessert was a tasty toffee cake. Both red and white wines were available during dinner. We retired to the living room for after dinner drinks and travel talk. My room was serviced while I was downstairs at dinner and I didn’t even see the butler go up the stairs.

Breakfast is served starting at 7am in the communal dining room. There are freshly baked croissants as well as a continental breakfast along with the option to order hot dishes. It was beautiful, plentiful and tasty.

I found this property to be very romantic and would be a great place for couples who are big wine enthusiasts. You can easily reach the Franschhoek wineries as well as the Stellenbosch wineries very easily from their location. 3 of the top 10 restaurants in the world are in Franschhoek so foodies would love it here too. Loved sharing travel stories with the other agents and tour companies there.

As of August 1, 2018, you now can stay at one of the four villas at The Village – either exclusively or per-room (new!).  The 4 villas are: COLONIAL — 1 Garden Room & 3 Courtyard Rooms GRANGE — 2 Garden Rooms & 1 Courtyard Room, GALERIE — remains a 2-bedroom private villa, MANOIR — with a Garden Suite & a Petite Room.  The Lodge, where I stayed, remains available as a 5-bedroom country house or per room for guests.
