Our Favorite Cape Town Restaurant Picks for 2019

by Sandy Salle on January 22, 2019

Dining in Cape Town can be a memorable experience, with the freshest ingredients, beautiful interiors, breathtaking views and world class wines.

Exceptional chefs across the city experiment with a range of flavors to create world class international fusion menus, but with the best local produce on hand, traditional taste experiences from the region can also be found. Our top choices give you a taste of the endless possibilities.

On your “not to be missed” list for when you dine in Cape Town is The Test Kitchen. It is Nouvelle Latin cuisine with a South African touch. Voted the #1 restaurant in South Africa, this is food entertainment as richly layered and engrossing as a well-written film. The menu is constantly evolving: Chef Luke Dale-Roberts has just introduced a new 21-course menu but his mantra hasn’t change. The focus is on flavor, flavor, flavor. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Celebrated chef, Luke Dale-Roberts has a created another unique and contemporary space with delicious bite-size offerings at The Pot Luck Club. This interesting and innovative cuisine coupled with an excellent wine list is served in a gloriously restored space with views. This is food to share and enjoy. There are two sittings each evening.

Third on our list is the trendy Kloof Street House. Both an indoor and outdoor bistro venue, popular for drinks in the courtyard garden or indoors in what was a private home now a relaxed venue with a changing menu of smaller and more substantial dishes should one choose to dine.

One of favorite fine dining experiences is at The Greenhouse in the Constantia neighborhood of Cape Town. Peter Tempelhoff, as the grand chef oversees this charmingly decorated dinner venue located at Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, famed for it’s glorious gardens and gracious hospitality. Fine dining with a comprehensive wine list, good service make this exclusive “tucked away” venue a real food lovers find with fresh ingredients from the garden and interesting seasonal cuisine. The food is beautifully plated without being so artsy that you feel you can’t touch it.

Looking for a relaxing bistro? Then make sure you check out Black Sheep Restaurant. Stylish contemporary yet relaxed venue with a French influenced menu by owner chef Laurent Deslandes on Heritage Square in the heart of the city. Join them for lunch or dinner as the daily blackboard menus feature ever changing inventive dishes to complement the existing menu.
