Sun, sea, sand . . . and Selous

by Sandy Salle on August 31, 2017

Kenya and South Africa have been combining sea and safari for some time. But now there’s a new player the beach and big game vacation stakes — a combination of Mozambique and Tanzania.

Azura, the boutique resort group, makes it easy to combine a beach holiday at its chic retreats along the Mozambique coast with its upscale safari lodge in the sprawling Selous Game Reserve.

One of the world’s largest nature reserves, Selous (pronounced “Say-Loo”) is a World Heritage Site renowned for the number and diversity of wild animals, as well as the park’s pristine African landscapes.

Spread across an area a big as West Virginia, Selous harbors all of the “big five” of African wildlife (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as significant numbers of other large animals (in particular crocodile and hippo) and more than 350 bird species.

Waterways make it easy to explore the park by boat as well as 4×4 safari vehicles and even on foot. And because Selous is so remote, your wildlife watching comes without the crowds one often encounters at the high-profile game parks of Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The most luxurious safari digs in southern Tanzania, Azura Selous revolves around 12 spacious “tented villas” along the park’s Ruaha River, each of them with private plunge pools and butlers to look after your every need. The boutique lodge also offers fabulous dining in varied locations.

Best of all — for those who crash close encounters of the wildlife kind — the camp offers veteran guides who create customized safari itineraries. Choose from Land Rovers, motorized water craft or walking safaris. Or maybe even try all three modes during your stay in Selous.

Hills of Africa can arrange everything you need to combine sun, sea, sand and Selous, including your stays at Azura Quilalea in the Quirimbas Archipelago off northern Mozambique or Azura Benguerra in the Bazaruto Islands down south, as well as transfers to Azura Selous.
