When Things Go Awry in Joburg

by Sandy Salle on May 23, 2017

Travel is often fraught with unexpected or inconvenient events like lost luggage, delayed flights and long layovers. If one of these things happens to befall you while passing through Johannesburg — while staying at the Athol Place, The Peech Boutique Hotel or The Saxon — don’t fret. Because we’ve got all kinds of ideas of how to replace your lost items and fill those idle hours.

First and foremost, some of our favorite Joburg hotels are located in the South African city’s upscale Sandton neighborhood, where just about everything you need is close at hand. Sandton City — one of nation’s biggest and best shopping malls — is literally within a short taxi ride distance of Athol Place, The Peech Boutique Hotel and The Saxon. The mall features clothing boutiques, shoe shops, drug stores, luggage outlets and a wide array of other retail.

If it’s time you’re looking to fill rather than a new suitcase, Sandton offers tons of day and night distractions.

You can tee off at a dozen local golf courses that book visitors (rather than just club members). Reserve your spot — plus cart and caddy — via the website Last Minute Golf South Africa.

Depending on the time of year, you could catch a cricket or rugby match at Wanderers Stadium in Sandton, a bastion of both sports going back to the 1880s.

If you’re part of a group (rather than going solo) consider a hike through one of the nature areas around Sandton. One of the best is the trail along Linksfield Ridge and Harvey Municipal Nature Reserve, a trek that offers great views of the city and beyond.

Avid avian lovers might take a wander through the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary and see how many of the park’s 250 confirmed bird species they can spot.

High quality South African arts, crafts and jewelry are the forte at independent shops like Amatuli and Or-Gari Golden Safari. Grab a massage or beauty treatment at Mowana Day Spa or sign up for a cooking class at Healthy Food Studio. All of these within a short taxi ride from both hotels.

If it’s after dark, sample South Africa’ well-honed sense of humor — and get plugged into the country’s hot-button social issues — at Goliath Comedy Club. Or catch a music, dance or drama performance in the Teatro at Montecasino. Sandton also boasts plenty of bars and restaurants for après-show dinner or drinks.

In other words: there’s no reason to while away that extra time in your room when Sandton offers so many ways to while away a long delay or layover.
