Why I Cherish Taking My Family on An African Safari Vacation

Where are the happiest memories made? In my experience, the happiest memories are the ones I have with my family on vacation. From hiking to playing on the beach, and camping to attending football games together, there is nothing more joyous to me than spending time with my children and husband.

But I have to say that even though those experiences are some of my most cherished, there is no possession or experience in the world that can bring about the same feeling of pure bliss I feel on an African family safari with my children, husband, and extended family. To me, a trip to Africa with my loved ones is the most rewarding to both my entire family and myself.

I started taking my children, Abby and Michael, to Africa when they were 9-weeks-old. I’ve taken them to Zimbabwe to see where I grew up, as well as South Africa. these areas as a family is a unique way to learn and discover together, and introduce my children to a world outside of their daily routine. I personally think this is important in teaching life lessons, compassion, and expanding their knowledge of the world and its people. We all have made lifelong friends on safari with locals, as well as other travelers, which allows my children and our family as a whole to stay connected to various places around the world.

I wanted to share with my children the same wonderful experiences I had as a child growing up in Zimbabwe and traveling Africa with my family. And it is my passion in life to help other families do the same and relish in the gifts of family travel.

At Hills of Africa, family travel is one of our most celebrated specialties and one of our favorite types of trips to plan for clients.

Here’s how one family viewed their trip to Africa and its power in transforming their entire family:

“Any chance to re-live some of the life-altering experiences that my family and I had on our Hills of Africa safari is most welcomed. Nothing can beat watching the African sunrise over the Okavango Delta with loved ones or feeling the exhilaration of a charging elephant testing the abilities of our dedicated guide as we back up quickly down the road!

Nothing compares to the playful antics of leopard cubs wrestling in the tall savanna grass! When will we ever get another chance to view the majesty of a pride of lions against a backdrop of acacia and baobab trees or a family of cheetahs lounging on a termite mound before an evening of hunting impala?

The magic of Africa now runs through me as surely as if I were a child of the Kalahari, leaving my footprints next to the spoor of the hyena. This is the same magic that rekindled the passions of my daughters and wife for nature and the great outdoors. Everyone needs to share the experiences of a trip like this with their loved ones. It was unforgettable, spiritually uplifting, and truly just fodder for the soul. Throw in a couple of World Cup soccer games and I believe one has found the formula for the perfect holiday!

Many thanks to the Hills of Africa team who made this trip to Africa a reality for my family. Thanks to the staff of the Chitabe, Tubu Tree, and Duma Tau camps for the meals, the dancing and entertainment, and the camaraderie. Thanks to the extremely knowledgeable guides for teaching us the species and the environmental impact of everything we do. Lastly, thank you Sandy for helping us get through a very trying time when we thought all the preparation would be for naught after we missed our flight. I can’t wait to schedule our next trip to Cape Town or Kruger or to recommend your company to friends.”
