I guess it is normal when you move from one culture to another to miss the foods that you grow up with. We are always looking in shops for things like Marmite and Cadburys Chocolate. Sadly it is much harder to find African foods in the US, a barbeque is just not quite the same with out Sadza (made from corn meal) I tried to make it once, this involves a lot of stirring (to the point where I had blisters).
We have a South African restaurant near us in Savannah but it is closed on Sundays so we have not had a chance to try it out yet, I heard that a Zimbabwean has a truly African restaurant in Charlottesville VA that is very good, but nothing, replaces the atmosphere of sitting down in a busy village eating "Sadza ne Nyama" with your fingers.
Enjoy,

What’s Your Idea of the Ultimate Culinary Scene?
Many discerning travelers would argue that a luxurious vacation isn’t complete without experiencing a deep exploration of the destination’s culinary scene. And in Africa, food-lovers have no trouble embracing the edible masterpieces created by some of the world’s most renowned chefs.
No matter what type of fare delights your palette, Africa has something exceptional to offer everyone:

What’s your idea of the ultimate culinary scene?
Ethnic Explorations?
For the adventurous eater, there are a plethora of soul-satisfying restaurants within Africa. From eclectic café ambiances to homemade beers, spicy stews to mogodu (tripe), and more conservative eats to exotic dishes, it’s no wonder Africa is considered the melting pot of unique dishes and culinary sensations.
Many of Africa’s most exciting and distinctive restaurants are full of personality, artistic exploration, and an energy that is absolutely invigorating. |
Ethnic explorations on the radar:
One of Africa’s premier spots for delicious soul food is the quaint township of Soweto, South Africa. Some of this township’s best-kept-soul-secrets include B’s Museum Restaurant, Wandie’s Place, and Nambitha’s Eatery.
Known for phenomenal food and an exciting atmosphere, B’s Museum Restaurant is a favorite among visitors to Soweto. With a long list of delightful dishes to choose from including a buffet of stews, grilled meats, African specialty dishes (samp, pap, mogodu, morogo, and chakalaka), salads, and homemade bread and ginger beer, customers are never short of delicious options.
As soon as you enter B’s you’ll understand why it’s called B’s Museum Restaurant. With walls lined with framed newspaper clippings from historic events—including the apartheid and the transition into democracy—you’ll not only feel full of delicious eats, but you’ll also feel full of culture. |

Fine dining?
One thing South Africa isn’t short of is fine dining establishments. With some of the most spectacular culinary masters in the world, Africa’s luxury accommodations and city hot spots rank at the top with some of the world’s finest eateries.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic steakhouse, trendy tapas bar, or quaint bistro, southern Africa isn’t short of award-winning restaurants. |
|
Fine dining on the radar:
If you’re in the mood for unique flavors and fresh local fare, La Colombe in Cape Town, South Africa is the place to go. Renowned for Chef Luke Dale-Roberts’ exquisite creations, La Colombe is the perfect place to enjoy fine dining in the Cape. The food is finely crafted with a fusion of Asian and Contemporary French influences to create unexpected, yet delightful flavors. Wine lovers also come to this classic restaurant to thumb through La Colombe’s exquisite wine selection, knowing they’ll find the perfect wine to compliment their meal.
But that’s not all La Colombe has to offer. With a remarkable, lush backdrop of sprawling vineyards and open countryside, guests to La Colombe experience much more than exceptional food and a charming ambiance—the dining experience is visionary. |

Seafood Extravaganza?
From fish n’ chips to crayfish, and mussels to oysters, food lovers are left weak-at-the-knees after the first bite of southern Africa’s treasures from the sea. Although seafood can be enjoyed along the entire span of South Africa’s coastline, some of the best places to enjoy freshly caught seafood include the Western Cape, Kalk Bay (Cape Town), Mozambique, and Zanzibar. |
|
Seafood on the radar:
The quaint, Western Cape town of Paternoster is a great place to enjoy a weekend of sensational seafood selections. With a handful of charming cafés to choose from in this picturesque town, visitors may find it difficult to fit each restaurant in during their visit. But one of the area’s most acclaimed establishments is Salt Coast, which is a restaurant / inn ran by Chef Suzi Holtzhausen. This delightful restaurant / inn offers visitors the opportunity to rest for the night and enjoy spectacular seafood dishes, or simply stop by for the evening to enjoy a remarkable meal. She also offers personalized cooking courses and tastings for the adventurous foodie.
