A Taste of an Escorted African Safari & Community Involvement Journey in Southern Africa

Featuring Johannesburg, Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, Lusaka, Victoria Falls

This Escorted Safari Itinerary, created for The Give Movement Journey, focuses on sustainable tourism and community conservation efforts. Sandy Salle, owner of Hills of Africa Travel is the escort for this trip, sharing her knowledge of the area with travelers and guiding them through their journey in Africa.

The trip begins in Zimbabwe where we embark on exciting game drives through the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve to witness rhino, elephant, wild dog, and so much more.

After exciting game-viewing adventures in Zimbabwe we head to Zambia where we build a home for a local family through Habitat for Humanity and help send two girls to school for one year. This program sets to link local and international volunteers with communities in Zambia for a life-changing experience of cultural exchange, skills transfer and interaction.

Next, we head to Victoria Falls where we take a historical and cultural tour of the Falls to see one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.

After our visit to Victoria Falls we visit The Womens Curio Market where we witness women carving, basket weaving, and selling their curios. During this time, we hear from the local women about their small businesses and lifestyles. The following day we meet with the local women again where we discuss successful business practices with them and learn about what has worked, and hasn't worked in their own businesses. This interaction provides not only the travelers with an invaluable experience, but it also allows local women to benefit from interacting with other business owners from around the world.

The Victoria Falls Hotel, popularly known as "the grand old lady of the Falls," is situated in the Victoria Falls National Park, a World Heritage Site, and is a member of the exclusive Leading Hotels of the World group. It is one of only three 150-accredited hotels in Zimbabwe.

The Edwardian-style five-star hotel, built in 1904, was recently redecorated and refurbished and now combines the charm of the old with the convenience of the new. Set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, it provides the tranquility and seclusion that many guests seek.

The famous Victoria Falls, referred to by locals as "the smoke that thunders," is just a ten-minute walk away using the hotel's private pathway.

World-class service, and food and beverage choice and preparation, make the hotel a magnet for international visitors and locals alike. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from and there is always something to please everyone. The Livingstone Room is known for fine dining and dancing; the Jungle Junction is famous for its decadent breakfast and dinner buffets, as well as ethnic entertainment in the evenings; and Stanley's Terrace, is celebrated for its clear view of the Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, and is also renowned for its cocktails and afternoon teas. The Terrace has been a rendezvous for adventurers in Africa for over a century.

Tour of Victoria Falls - This afternoon, we will take a trip to the Victoria Falls and enjoy a fascinating tour. When David Livingstone first saw the falls in 1865 he was in the company of 2 local tribesmen who showed him this Mighty Wonder of World. This site today is a world heritage site with the largest single curtain of falling water on the planet, also known as "The Smoke that Thunders."

After visiting the Victoria Falls we will be taken to the Traditional Craft Village. This is our first introduction to the women we will be working with in Victoria Falls. Please come with open minds and open hearts - take some time to learn about the women here and the role they play in their family household. Enjoy wandering around the market, so you can learn about their livelihoods and also spend some time thinking about how we can help them to sell more arts and crafts. There will be local people in the village performing traditional skills such as carving, basket weaving and even cooking.

THIS EVENING, WE WILL HAVE A TEAM DINNER.

Day 9 - Victoria Falls

Lunch will be provided during the session.

This afternoon is at your leisure. We can help you sign up for optional activities available at an additional charge.

This evening we will be treated to a home-cooked meal. On the outskirts of Victoria Falls Town is Chinotimba Township which is where a lot of Zimbabweans working in the tourism industry in Victoria Falls live. It's a friendly township with proper houses rather than shacks and it is here that Aunty Flatter and her likeminded neighbors have started their own businesses. They welcome you into their homes to interact in an informal way and learn more about each others' countries, cultures and traditions. As Flatter's daughters prepare a tasty traditional Zimbabwean meal, you are able to ask questions - and be prepared to answer some as well! The food ranges from beef and chicken stews to peanut laced pumpkin, mopane worms and the traditional sadza which is a corn flour mash and the staple food in many countries in Southern Africa. Expect a unique hour or two!
