Day 2 - Johannesburg

This morning, you will be collected from the hotel lobby and taken on a private-guided tour of Johannesburg City and The Apartheid Museum. A day of inspiration and enlightenment will be yours today.

Johannesburg City Tour: Learn about the City of Gold and its suburbs. Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city, remains the country's financial and commercial heart. View the "Rainbow Nation" at work in Sandton and Downtown Johannesburg. The Northern suburbs can be viewed from a vantage point after which we drive through Hillbrow, the most densely populated part of the city, cross over Nelson Mandela Bridge and into downtown Johannesburg. A stop is made at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown where a variety of African arts and crafts are sold. Constitutional Hill is the new home of the Constitutional Court, the protector of all South Africans' basic rights and freedom. Constitutional Hill is also the site of Johannesburg's old Fort Prison Complex, known as No.4, where thousands of people were brutally punished before democracy in 1994. Many of South Africa's leading political activists such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were detained here.

Apartheid Museum: The first of its kind, this newly built museum offers an unbiased account of South Africa's history over the past century, eloquently highlighting our country's social and racial dynamics and celebrating our miracle arrival at democracy. The architecture of the venue is stark and uncompromising, bringing to mind cold prison cells where many people were detained without trial. The tone of the museum is unapologetic and objectively presents apartheid's strict segregation policies without preaching or playing to your emotions. The experience may be traumatic for some, but is ultimately reconciliatory, with a huge piece of the museum devoted to the release of Nelson Mandela. It's an emotional and uplifting experience; one which will linger long after the tour has ended.

Day 3 - Cape Town

This morning, you will be collected from your hotel lobby and driven to the Johannesburg Airport.

You will check in for your domestic flight to Cape Town (This flight is not included in the itinerary cost).

Welcome to Cape Town. On arrival in Cape Town you will be met by your guide and transferred to Four Rosmead Boutique Hotel.

Four Rosmead Boutique

Four Rosmead is a stylish guesthouse situated in the quiet residential suburb of Oranjezicht and was built in 1903. This remodeled house is surrounded by landscaped gardens and panoramic views of Table Mountain. Four Rosmead is conveniently situated near many of Cape Town's main attractions, such as the V&A Waterfront and the Atlantic Seaboard.

This peaceful setting encompasses the best of both worlds, as it is just a short stroll away from vibrant Kloof Street where a variety of cafes and restaurants are frequented by tourists, creating an exciting urban buzz

Treat yourself to a rejuvenating massage treatment in the guest house's Pamper Spa, or relax on a sun lounger next to the salt water swimming pool. You will love the varied selection of original South African artworks which are on display throughout the common guest areas.

Accommodation: 1 x deluxe room on a bed and breakfast basis for 4 nights

This afternoon, you will be collected from your hotel to go on a private, half-day tour of the City of Cape Town. Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and as such has acquired the name of the "Mother City". Today we take a walk through the history of the city; its people, its buildings and its business district.

Highlights of today will be:

  • Either a walk or a driving tour through the oldest part of the city. Simply let us know your preference. Here we explore the old history of the Dutch India Company occupation, followed by the invasion of the British in 1795. Both had a distinct impact on the city in terms of architecture.
  • Ascending the cable car to the top of Table Mountain (weather dependant). From the top of Table Mountain you enjoy panoramic views of the city and after a short stroll on a clear day you will be able to see all the way to Cape Point (weather dependant!).

Day 4 - Cape Town

Today, you will be collected by your Hills of Africa Travel guide for a private-guided day of wine tasting and exploring in the beautiful Cape Winelands.

On your first wine tour to the Cape, we introduce you to the Cape's oldest wine regions. The aim is to take a journey through this beautiful mountainous region and explore the history, wine, and architecture of the region. Be sure to mention what your interests are early in the day as well as whether you are a white wine or red wine drinker. The answers to these questions will change the direction that the tour goes during the day. Stellenbosch is the second oldest town; it boasts oak tree lined streets and gorgeous white houses from both the Dutch and English periods. This region is renowned as the best red wine region in the country. Today we explore Stellenbosch and possibly Franschhoek and Paarl - the routes will change depending on your interests.

Some of the experiences you enjoy could be: A visit to Vergelegen - one of our oldest estates, to explore their beautiful gardens and historical Cape Dutch Homestead; Wine tasting at some of the Cape's best estates; a tutored olive oil tasting or a chocolate and wine pairing experience; A cellar tour (note that this must be pre-booked well in advance.)

Day 5 - Cape Town

Today you will enjoy a private-guided tour exploring the gorgeous peninsula region of Cape Town. This scenic coastal meander will introduce you to the extended suburbs of Cape Town.

Highlights of the day include:

  • Passing through many of Cape Town's most beautiful villages: Camps Bay, Llundudno, Hout Bay, Simon's Town, and Kalk Bay.
  • A visit to the famous Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. Cape Point represents the success of Bartholomew Diaz who first discovered it while looking for a way to get to the East. He may not have made it all the way there, but finally the Portuguese knew that there was a turning point and as such there was hope that the route would be discovered. Nine years later the famous Vasco da Gama would pass the point and manage to get all the way through to the East. This opened up the Spice Routes for the Europeans and very soon there was shipping traffic passing the Cape on a regular basis.
  • A visit to the penguin colony at Boulders. Penguins are only found in the Southern hemisphere, and as such it is a treat for those from the North to be able to see them outside of an aquarium. The African penguin's natural habitat is to live on islands off the Coast of South Africa. However, man has disturbed many of the penguins' natural habitats over the years. In the 1980's a couple of penguins decided to relocate to one of Cape Town's favorite beaches, Boulders beach, and they must have liked what they saw as they then got busy breeding. Today there are over 3,000 penguins living at Boulders. The beach is now only open to penguins and is closed to sun tanners! There are however viewing platforms that will allow you to get close to the penguins.

Day 6 - Cape Town

Today, you will be collected from your hotel lobby for a day packed full of "adrenalin" on your Great White Shark diving trip.

The main focus of this tour is a natural interaction with the sharks and Apex Tours makes every effort to treat these animals with the respect they deserve and at the same time try to share their passion with you.

The great whites of Seal Island are now world famous for their highly athletic breaches in pursuit of Cape Fur seals, which they hunt in the area. You will observe natural predatory behavior for as long as possible; however it is usually the first hour and half that is the most intense. After this period a short decoy tow using a fake cut out carpet seal is used to try to get the sharks to breach. It is a very unique way to elicit predatory behavior and has been very useful in helping to identy different strategies adopted by the different sharks.

Thereafter a spot is chosen to anchor to attract sharks to the vessel. Once a shark approaches, a small bait is put in the water to keep the sharks interested around the boat for identification and viewing purposes. At no point are the sharks purposefully fed or handled.

If the weather conditions are favorable, the cage is lowered into the water for cage diving. Please note: Great white sharks are completely wild animals and as such sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 7 - Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Today you will be collected from your hotel lobby and transferred to Cape Town airport where you will be helped to check in for your domestic flight to Johannesburg (This flight is not included in itinerary price).

This afternoon, you will be taken on a private guided tour of Victoria Falls. The tour will begin with a visit to the world renowned Victoria Falls where you will explore the geological history of the area that created this magnificent spectacle. The sights, sounds, and aromas of the Falls are truly an awe-inspiring experience that provokes humbling feelings from within - here, indeed, is nature's supreme masterpiece. No photograph can begin to depict the reality, and nothing prepares you for your first sight.

To discover how Victoria Falls was formed and what local customs and traditions surround this area, it's well worth taking a guided tour. These tours of the Victoria Falls are extremely informative and end with a visit to the local art and crafts center.

Day 12 - Victoria Falls

Today is a day of excitement and being in the middle of the Zambezi River. This morning, you will be collected from you hotel for an adventure in white water rafting.

The wildest white water rafting in the world is on the Zambezi river at Victoria Falls. White Water Rafting on the Zambezi River is judged to be amongst the finest in the world, and a day you will cherish for the rest of your life. The rapids are run in large rubber rafts, launched from just below Victoria Falls. You can do a half day trip, full day or multi day.

This afternoon, you will be treated to a helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls, and witness what David Livingstone described as "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in flight". Each seat in the aircraft is next to a window and offers unsurpassed views of the spectacular scenery below. This 15 minute flight gives you an aerial view of Victoria Falls.

Day 13 - Victoria Falls

Elephant Back Safari - This morning, your Hills of Africa Travel representative will transfer you to the Wallow, a sanctuary for elephants. Here you will begin your day with an elephant back safari. This safari is not just a ride on the largest animal in Africa, it's an unforgettable experience where you will get to interact with the elephants as well as enjoy a ride through wilderness areas and beautiful riverine scenery.

Each of the elephants was orphaned at a very young age, and would have died if not saved by this program. The elephants have been given a second chance at life and you will get to enjoy it. They take 2 daily walks through the national park, which is an integral part of their day.

Game viewing from the back of an elephant is very different from the seat in a vehicle. The animals that you encounter see the elephant and not you, and react the way they would react to another animal in the bush, not a human.

Whilst on the ride, you may see other wild elephant as well as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a host of other plains game. Along the Zambezi River, hippo and crocodile are common and there is a wide variety of bird species. Each elephant has its own handler and you will leave having witnessed the elephant's incredible skills, intelligence and willingness to respond to instruction.

After this unique experience, you will be transferred back to your hotel to freshen up and prepare for your afternoon flights home.

You will be collected from the hotel lobby and driven to the Victoria Falls Airport. You will then check in for your international flights home.

Thank you for travelling with Hills Of Africa Travel. Safe travels and we hope you have experienced the true magic of Africa!
