Nomads Lamai SerengetiIf
you were to visit only one place in the Serengeti, it should be here.
This is no half-hearted boast; the iconic Kogakuria kopje in the
northern Serengeti is the most commanding vantage point for miles
around, with never-ending views beyond the Mara River valley across the
whole Lamai area to the north.
Its the site where some of
Nomad's founders Mark & Milly Houldsworth ran their very first
safari camp in 1993, where they sat amongst the rocks and planned their
wedding and future adventures thereafter. As they headed off to the
Selous to join Richard Bonham, another Nomad founder, Richard &
Jules Knocker took on the running of this camp and went on to make it
their own much-loved home. Over many a star-lit evening these fine
safari pioneers, soon to be joined by other like-minded souls, planned
and dreamed as they sat on, and within, the rocks and thought if only.
During the years since, Nomads has been careful not to stray too far
and has kept its feet planted firmly in the area with mobile and
seasonal camps operating from this very spot to much acclaim. Now many
years later, with thanks to planetary alignment, or whatever you might
want to call it, this most special place has been entrusted to Nomad
with a long lease from Tanzania National Parks. So with a growing sense
of returning home we are developing, within these rocks, what will
surely become one of the Serengeti's most iconic camps.
There
are just 12 tents in all, split between two entirely separate camps,
the Main Camp and the smaller Private Camp. Each tent site has been
carefully thought out. Firstly and most importantly with the elements
in mind, to take maximum advantage of the view, the sun, the wind and
even the rain, welcome when it comes. This involved much sitting in
quiet and careful contemplation, with binoculars, compass and sundowner
in hand. But also, and perhaps of even greater importance, each site is
designed such that to the casual eye you won't see that there is
anything there. The rooms are a clever blend of canvas, ferro, and
natural poles. The brief to the designers was simple: to become the
guardian of this kopje, we needed to preserve all the things about it
that has made it iconic. Nomads understands absolutely the
responsibility that comes with this.
Accommodation: 1 x standard room on full-board basis for 2 nights

Singita Sasakwa LodgeSingita
Sasakwa Lodge is one of three Singita lodges in this enormous private
concession (340 000 acres), which means that you'll have this wild
stretch of Africa all to yourself. Sasakwa Lodge is built in the style
of an Edwardian manor house. Stone walls, deep verandas, high ceilings,
stately furniture, silverware and ornamental pieces complete the
picture. Each cottage has a private infinity-edge pool overlooking
'where the land stretches to forever'. The bedrooms with inviting
four-posters are beautifully appointed, displaying typical African
influences with touches of wood, leather and grass, alongside crisp
linens, imported chandeliers and hand-crafted furniture.
Each
air-conditioned suite features a bedroom, lounge with fire place,
veranda, en-suite bathroom with bath, shower, dressing area, guest
bathroom, guest toilet, private living room, private plunge pool and
veranda with Swarovski spotting scope. Cottages feature a personal bar
and fridge, electronic safe, air-conditioning, direct dial telephone
(US lines), wireless internet access and fire replaces. There is
wheelchair access to certain cottages.
The entrancing view
from on high is an ever-changing tapestry of grasslands, clouds and
wildlife as they move across the landscape. The view within of long
elegant hallways and inviting sitting rooms is faithful to the
architecture and furnishings of the most splendid colonial era homes.
Were Karen Blixen, the author of Out of Africa, to arrive at Sasakwa
today, she would recognise a spot imbued with the same aesthetic that
she lavished on her beloved home in the Ngong hills outside Nairobi.

Mnemba IslandThe

of them. While the dazzling sands and brilliant sunshine invite you to
spend idle hours on shore, magnificent coral reefs create an underwater
wonderland that lures you to explore the warm, crystal clear waters of
the Indian Ocean. Scores of snorkelling and diving sites form a gateway
to a world of incredible sea creatures. This exquisite private island
with its white coral sand beaches and spectacular coral reefs is
renowned as one of the world's most romantic ocean destinations,
offering a seclusion and rustic exclusivity unparalleled on the African
coastline.
Set off the northeastern tip of Zanzibar and
surrounded by a coral atoll, Mnemba is home to a staggering diversity
of marine life. In an effort to protect and preserve these precious
ecosystems, &Beyond has partnered with the Zanzibar government and
the local fishing communities to have the atoll and its surroundings
proclaimed the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area. Mnemba Island
Lodge is a barefoot paradise on a private island, where just ten simple
but luxurious palm-frond bandas lie hidden in a tropical beach forest
fringed by a white beach. Midway between the bandas and the Indian
Ocean are shaded traditional Zanzibari 'beach' beds, perfect for
reading, sleeping, gazing at dhows or doing nothing at all. Romantic

a few meters away.
