OVERVIEW
Climate: Summer months are December through April. South Africa has mild winters during the months from May to November. Days are refreshingly warm with cold nights.
Credit Cards: Most establishments accept international credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, & American Express. Visa is the most widely used. In addition, ATMs are easily accessible in all major cities.
Currency: South African Rand. US Dollars can be used for tipping, but other purchases, activities, etc. will need to be paid for in the local currency.
Geography: South Africa is located on the continent’s southern tip, with the Atlantic Ocean bordering the west & the Indian Ocean bordering the south & east. South Africa is made up of various ethnic groups and is demarcated into nine provinces.
Languages: English, Afrikaans & Xhosa
Medical: Malaria Pills are highly recommended for travel. Please check with your physician as to the proper dosage if necessary.
Packing: Lightweight natural-colored clothing is preferable, i.e. khaki, brown, and beige, f visiting safari camps a jacket/fleece for evenings or cool days. Some of the city hotels require more formal dress for evenings. The lodges and camps are very informal and casual clothes are suitable.
Visas: US Citizens do not require holiday visas to enter South Africa. Passports must have at least 2 blank pages per country visited AND must be valid for 6 months after departure. NOTE: South Africa has strict immigration regulations when traveling with minors.
